I'm a former coach and now an assistant principal for 9th graders at the high school where I work. Reading your post reminds me of the skills I learned as an athlete and as a coach and how I have to apply them to my work with the ninth graders who make it to my office for discipline issues. Consistency, respect, and love are the qualities I try to demonstrate, because like Coach Yow and LySchale Jones, I believe in them and hope the best for them, even when they make poor decisions and have bad behavior.

Thanks for sharing!

I agree, Rick! A leader who shows weakness endears himself to his followers. Thanks for your insight.

Stephanie - this is a GREAT read. My opinion is that people *think* they are weak when they open up and ask for help, showing vulnerability. It is my experience, and this article demonstrates it, that it is the opposite. Keep these coming, they are very inspirational!

Hi FlyerFan,

Thanks for chiming in. Felt like I did adequate research online prior to the article and all the info I found indicated that Steinwachs was a good coach who helped his athletes achieve their potential. Obviously he has faults too. I was simply representing that he was making a counter cultural decision and I admired him for it—especially since it involves a commitment to serve our country.

You might want to delve a little deeper into someone's story before being so "impressed." Steinwachs' coaching days are over, whether he joins the military or not.

When facing career transitions (or any big decisions) it's important to develop clarity of your vision. Begin with the end in mind by clearly defining what kind of career in diet and fitness you want. Then, determine what the first step is toward that. Is it more education? A better network of people in that field? Break it down into manageable steps and it becomes less overwhelming. Good luck!

Well said. The challenges and duties of a pastor are easily over looked. There is a lot that is demanded of them and as you said, takes away from their need to be cared for as well. I Hope he has a good one. The Church benefits from them taking this well deserved time as well.
